John V. Commons earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University and, after being honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps, attended Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis where he was awarded his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree.
He has been practicing law in Federal and State Courts throughout Indiana since 1973.
John has a vast amount of experience in Criminal Law. In his early career, he was appointed as a Public Defender in Marion County major felony and spent many years as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney eventually becoming the Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Marion County. He has participated, both defending and prosecuting, in many high profile cases including death penalty trials.
Throughout this time he has also provided legal services, counseling and representation in most areas of civil law, including Business Law and Collections; Divorce and Family Law; and Wills, Trusts, Estates, and all facets of Probate Law. John Has been a guest lecturer at Indiana University, Butler University, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, the Indiana Police Training Academy, the Indianapolis Police Department Training Academy, the Marion County Sheriff's Department Training Academy, has presented many Continuing Legal Education lectures and has been a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
John has tried well over 100 civil and criminal jury trials in both Federal and State Courts and presented arguments before the Indiana Supreme Court on several occasions. Adding this to the thousands of hearings, clients represented and legal documents prepared provides John with vast experience with several overlapping areas of law that allow him to provide legal services to you that can only rarely be matched.
